YORKSHIRE CUP SEMI-FINAL - SATURDAY 31ST JULY - PUDSEY BC v CONONLEY (at GREENROYD, HALIFAX, 2.30PM)

YORKSHIRE INTER-DISTRICT COMPETITION - SUNDAY 25TH JULY 2010

Bradford were crowned Yorkshire ABA Inter-District champions on Sunday as they defeated West Riding in a closely contested final in Halifax.....

In a marathon day of bowling lasting nearly 12 hours, Bradford's first match against Halifax was played at Halifax Bowling Club, Thrum Hall at 10am. There were 4 pools of teams all playing in the Halifax district, with Castleford completing the trio in pool C with Bradford.

Bradford managed 6 out of 10 winners against the host district and a winning aggregate of 187-164. In the second group match Halifax bounced back to beat Castleford 185-171 so Bradford knew that a win against Castleford in the final group match would be enough to reach the semi-finals.

This time Bradford gained 7 winners against Castleford and an aggregate of 194-150 and would play Wakefield in their semi-final as they edged out 2009 champions Huddersfield in pool B.

The venue switched to Kingston Bowling Club for the semi-final but with only 2 winners in the first 5 jacks, Bradford found themselves trailing by 14 points at the halfway stage. As Wakefield had one foot in the final, the game completely turned on it's head as Bradford produced 4 winners in the last 5 jacks and a 30 point swing to win the game 185-169.

The final venue was Sowerby Bridge West End and the Bradford team would be facing 7-times winners West Riding. Bradford got off to a great start in the final with 4 winners in the opening 5 jacks to hold an advantage of 21 points. West Riding then responded with winning cards to 21-17 and 21-11 at jacks 6 and 7 to reduce the margin to just 7 with the outcome of the final 3 games left to decide the winners. At number 8, Paul Gill trailed 7-14 whilst at number 9 Neil Mylan was 9-15 adrift with number 10 for Bradford Stuart King 15-8 up. The noise levels increased as West Riding sensed a chance of snatching the game but all 3 Bradford players upped their game in the latter stages and when Kingy won to 13 it was all over. Paul also managed to get over the line 21-20 whilst Neil fought back to get 15 very useful points and keep Bradford's winning to 10.

A brilliant team effort from the 10 players and supporters gave Bradford the trophy for only the second time since the event started in 1984.

PUDSEY CLASSIC - WEEK 1 (SAT. 24TH JULY 2010)

The 2010 Pudsey Classic got underway in glorious conditions with some excellent bowling. The unexpected rain changed the green later in the evening and here's how it went...

Andy Whitaker v Paul Leah

Paul raced into an 8-1 lead as it took Andy a while to get into the game but once he did get hold of the jack for a few ends the game turned around and Paul found himself trailing 11-12. The pair levelled at 14-a-piece and Paul re-gained the lead at 17-15 only for Andy to chip in a 4-break to go in front 19-17. Back to back singles from Paul gave him a shout at 19-accross but it was the South Yorkshireman who grabbed a vital pair at the next end to edge through 21-19.

Brian Richards v Robert Hitchen

There was nothing to separate Brian and Robert in the early stages as Brian held a slender 8-7 lead. Robert then found a piece to his liking as he strung together a 13-break to get to the hill 20-8. A late chalk from Brian was his final involvement as Robert cantered through 21-9.

Martin Hodson v Danny Sillitoe

Danny made the brighter start in this contest to establish an early 12-6 lead but Martin used his knowledge of previous trips to Pudsey and found himself back in the tie at 13-12. Neither player could then hold the jack or more than two ends to 17-14 but a crucial pair for Danny looked to make him a cert at 19-14. Martin had other ideas and levelled at 19-accross then singles were exchanged to make it level at 20's. Martin led into the top left hand corner but left room only for Danny to fall short with his final bowl and it was Martin into round two 21-20.

Harry Seehra v Darren Smith

Harry was in top form with his striking early in the game and had to be just to keep level at 6-6 with Darren. 3 singles from H gave him a 9-6 advantage but a 9-break in reply from Darren put him firmly in the driving seat at 15-9. This lead was extended to 19-11 and despite a late rally from Harry he was in the early bath going out 21-14.

David Scott v Mike Flitcroft

Scotty usually has a good run at Pudsey and made a great start to go 10-3 up. Mike was making his first visit to Pudsey and did well to keep in the game at 13-6 and 16-7. At the end of the day, Dave had just too much and was a comfortable 21-12 winner.

Andy Milsom v Chris Hill

Another even game in the early stages with neither player able to breakaway at 7-7. Chris did then edge in front 11-7 but Andy got back in to 11-10. Chris then showed his quality over the next few ends with a 10-break to romp home 21-10.

Darren Hennessy v Clay Flattley

Clay and Darren swapped pairs for fun in the opening ends with Daz 9-7 to the good after just 9 ends. Clay grabbed the lead 11-9 a few ends later but it Daz who proved the stronger in the latter part of the game with a total of 8 pairs to seal a very nice 21-13 victory.

Paul Heap v Nigel Cranston

Nigel and Paul had to kit up in their waterproofs for this one as the drizzle persisted and with 3 pairs in the opening 5 ends Cranny took to the front 7-1. Paul then going and a string of singles saw him draw level at 9-9. Nigel had another good run to go 15-11 only for Paul to respond and level again at 15's. A break of 5 from Nigel took him to 20-15 but you're never quite there until that final chalk. Nigel did have to wait another 3 ends but was relieved to get home 21-18.

First Round Results:

Second Round

Robert Hitchen v Andy Whitaker

This was a cracking game for the spectators as the lead changed hands several times until Andy created a bit of daylight at 15-12. This could have gone either way as the pair swapped singles to 17-16 when Andy chalked a pair to lead 19-17. Robert replied with a pair to lead out at 18-19 but left enough room at the final end for Andy to squeeze in for a pair and go through 21-18.

Darren Smith v Martin Hodson

This proved to be one of the longest games of the night at 32 ends with a distinct lack of pairs but nevertheless a great contest with neither player giving an inch. As Darren led 10-7, it was Martin who put in a 7-break to pinch the lead at 14-10. This was extended to 16-12 and 18-15 and Martin looked favourite to reach the qualifying round for the first time. It was Darren though who showed his character in the closing stages winning 4 of the last 5 ends to wrap up the victory 21-19.

Chris Hill v David Scott

Scotty looked good as he played his usual corner mark but could only hold a slender of lead of 8-6 and 12-9. An untypical end from Dave saw him play two no-balls allowing Chris a cheap pair for 12-11 but Scotty soon got back in and led 18-15 looking a big favourite. You never know what will happen in bowls though and it was Chris who held his nerve to pinch a 6-break and cross the line 21-18.

Nigel Cranston v Darren Hennessy

Great play from both players in the early stages saw Nigel just ahead 9-7 but Daz decided to up his game and chalked an 11-break to stun Nige at 18-9. Cranny never gives up though and rallied to 16-18 only for Daz to chip out with a pair and a single 21-16.

Second Round Results:

Robert Hitchen 18 Andy Whitaker 21

Darren Smith 21 Martin Hodson 19

David Scott 18 Chris Hill 21

Darren Hennessy 21 Nigel Cranston 16

Qualifying Games:

Andy Whitaker v Darren Smith

Andy's early 5-2 lead was enough to get Darren playing as Darren took to the front 7-5. From 8-6 it looked like we were in for a classic until Andy decided he'd make it an early night for Darren as he carded a 14-break including 5 pairs to lead 20-8. Darren did reply with a single and a pair late on but had to bow out 21-11 with Andy reaching the finals for the first time.

Chris Hill v Darren Hennessy

Both players had shown great quality in their previous two games of the evening and this proved to be the game of the night. It didn't look that way at one stage as from 10-6 up, Daz eased away to 20-10 with Chris looking out of it. It was then Darren's time to sweat a bit as Chris put in a pair-pair-single to go 20-15. Next end, yet another pair to Chris 20-17, then another 20-19 what was Darren thinking? The 29th end and Chris led out two good bowls at that stage with Daz's first bowl nowhere. A pause for thought and Daz did just enough to save and see the game deadlocked at 20-a-piece. Chris was now clear favourite on a mark he had just put in a 10-break but oh no....Chris saved his worst two bowls of the last end, going 4 yards over with both allowing a much relieved Mr Hennessy a place in finals 21-20.

The highest break was won by Andy Whitaker (14).

Qualifying Results:

Andy Whitaker 21 Darren Smith 11

Darren Hennessy 21 Chris Hill 20

Final draw numbers: Andy Whitaker 10, Darren Hennessy 1

BROTHERTON CUP FINALS - Sunday 27th June 2010

Pudsey could not make it back to back wins in the Brotherton Cup this year although did start the day well with a convincing win over Thornhill in their opening game....

On the tricky Brighouse No.2 green, Pudsey came through their quarter-final with 7 winners and a margin of 44 against Thornhill to get their place in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Eccleshill overcame Cross Roads in their first game to be Pudsey's next opponents at Brighouse No. 1 green.

The greens at Brighouse were in excellent condition and it was Eccleshill who proved they could handle the quick pace with 6 winners to 4 and a comfortable winning aggregate by 25-30 to knock out Pudsey.

Latest news was Eccleshill playing Littlemoor in the final at Spen Victoria.....

BRITISH PARKS - YORKSHIRE v EAST MIDLANDS - Sunday 20th June 2010

Yorkshire put in a terrific performance against East Midlands on Sunday to record an overall win of 423-406 and a result of 18-13 to put the white rose men at the top of section A in the British Parks County Championships.

In the home leg at Pudsey Bowling Club, Yorkshire carded 8 individual winners from 12 with Chris Mordue (21-7) and Dave Cooper (21-8) in good form whilst Stuart King (21-10) picked up man of the match with a superb display.

In East Midlands, the trip to Belvedere Park proved to be an enjoyable day for Yorkshire with 5 winners from 12 whilst also keeping the aggregate deficit to just 17 chalks. Mick Smith (21-11) put in an outstanding performance on the difficult No. 2 green at Belvedere which even left the homesters in disbelief.

Yorkshire now head their group and go into the final game against Wallasey in July as clear favourites to reach the knock-out semi-finals in August.
