YORKSHIRE
CUP & HUTCHINSON CUP DRAWS
The
draws for the Yorkshire cup competitions have been published and
Pudsey's two teams will next be in action on Saturday 17th May.
The
Yorkshire Cup 1st Round sees Pudsey travel to Halifax as they face
Almondbury Libs "B" at Ackroydon Victoria. In the Eric
Hutchinson Memorial Trophy, Pudsey will face Garforth Rec "A"
at Cononley.
There
is also a Henry Taylor Cup match to be played at Pudsey BC on the same
date with Black Swan taking on Elland C&BC.
YORKSHIRE
v CIVIL SERVICE - 27TH APRIL 2008
Yorkshire
played their traditional friendly match against the Civil Service on
Sunday at Sowerby Bridge Hillcrest with a couple of Pudsey's players in
action.
Under
the watchful eyes of the Yorkshire selectors, Allan Thompson, Keith
Hatzer and new home team captain Peter Jagger, it was a chance for the
12 uncapped players to put on a show.
James
Hanson played in the first four for Yorkshire and battled well to
register a 21-18 victory. John Spinks played in the back four and was
always in control as he romped home 21-11.
The
overall result was never in doubt with Yorkshire picking up 10 winners and a
healthy 81 margin on the aggregate.

BRADFORD
LEAGUE 2008
There
were mixed results for Pudsey's
3 teams competing in the Bradford League with two narrow defeats and a
good away win.
Pudsey
"A" hosted Spen Victoria "A" and although Tom Hanson
(21-6) put in a great captain's knock for the home side, they could not
stop the Spenners from registering 6 winners and pinching the aggregate
by 10 to take the match 17-13.
The
"B" team had slightly better fortunes on their visit to Spen
"B" with 7 winners and an overall win by 18-12. Captain
Richard Hodgson also led by example with a 21-14 win in the opening four
jacks and the Pudsey players responded right to the finish with Pudsey's
back two both chalking narrow wins to secure victory.
Sue
Chadwick's "C" team were hoping to make a positive start to
their league campaign and set off strongly with 5 out of 7 winners at
Bradford Moor from the opening exchanges. Unfortunately for Pudsey, this
was as good as it got as the final 3 jacks all went the way of Bradford
Moor as they took the game 17-13.

TABLE TENNIS CLUB ON THE GREEN - 20TH APRIL 2008
Pudsey's
table tennis section put their bats and balls away for an afternoon's
bowling on Sunday as they took to the green for a round robin
competition.
11
players entered the event and were divided into three groups, two with 4
players and one with 3 players. To add a bit of fun to the proceedings,
each game was played to just 10 ends with alternate leaders of the jack,
regardless of who won each end. Each group winner plus the 5 best
runners-up then contested the quarter-finals on a knockout basis.
Linda
and John didn't quite make it through to the knockout stages and Lynne
was unfortunate not to make it through as she tied with Kingsley in the
group stages with 18 points each. In a one-end bowl-off it was Kingsley
who just managed to beat Lynne's bowl to reach the last 8.
It
was decided to reduce the games to 8 ends for the quarter-finals and it
was Granville who came through a tough battle with Ray; Kath just pipped
Margaret; Sandra edged out Kingsley, whilst Doug ended Paul's hopes.
The
players contesting the semi-finals were now in their 5th game of the day
and were coming to terms with the conditions which were made difficult
by the light drizzle and cool temperatures. Granville and Doug were both
tipped as strong favourites to reach the final but it was the ladies who
made it through to the final game with Kath too strong for Granville
whilst Sandra put an end to Doug's chances of winning.
So
to the final, in which Sandra made the early breakthrough with a single
and a pair in the opening two ends. Kath replied in the next few ends to
make it level at 3-3 but Sandra again moved in front 4-3. Kath then
pinched a pair to go 5-4 ahead and at the last end just found enough to
gain a further point and clinch victory 6-4.
The
winner and runner-up were presented with prizes to round off a good
day's bowling at Pudsey.
YORKSHIRE
AND HUTCHINSON CUPS - 19TH APRIL 2008
Pudsey's
teams in the Yorkshire ABA cup competitions both safely made it through
the qualifying rounds on Saturday.
In
the Yorkshire Cup, Pudsey were up against Bradley & Colne "B"
at Grange Park in Wakefield. Although the green was very heavy and
possibly a levelling factor in cup games, Pudsey managed to overcome
their opponents with 11 out of 12 individual winners and a healthy
winning margin in excess of 100 chalks.
In
the Eric Hutchinson Memorial Cup, Pudsey's players put in a great
performance at Pellon Social in Halifax with 8 winners and the 4 losing
cards chalked 20 points each to give a convincing winning margin of
almost 80.
Pudsey
now look forward to the draw for the first round matches in each
competition which are scheduled to take place on Saturday 17th May.
PUDSEY
BC - DOUG HAIGH HANDICAP - SUN 11TH MAY 2008
The
first internal competition at Pudsey will take place on Sunday 11th May
2008, as the Doug Haigh Handicap is contested for the 12th successive
season.
The
start time is 10.30am and all players and spectators will be able to get
Bacon butties in the morning followed by refreshments from the kitchen
which will be open all day.
The
entry fee is £2.00 and the winner and runner-up will receive cash
prizes at the annual presentation evening in October.
This
event is also kindly sponsored by Doug's wife, Pat Haigh hence the

trophy.
COFFEE
MORNING AND PLANT SALE - SAT 10TH MAY 2008
Pudsey
will be holding a coffee morning at the club on Saturday 10th May from
10.00am which will include sales of various spring bedding plants,
homemade cakes, buns and biscuits with a free tea or coffee for all
those who attend.
Tickets
are now available for 50p each from the club president Steve Clayton, or
you can pay on the door.
If
anyone can donate any homemade baking for the cake stall this would be
much appreciated and can be handed in at the club on the Friday evening
before the event or on the day before 10.00am if possible.
BUILDING
PROJECT - HOLE DIGGING - 12 APRIL 2008
Pudsey
finally received the go-ahead from the council planning department this
week to progress with the building extension work at the club and
immediately assembled a working party to get the foundation holes dug
out.
Six
holes with a minimum depth of half a metre are required in which the
concrete footings will be made and onto which the steel framework will
sit.
The
work was completed on Saturday morning and now awaits further council
inspection before the concrete stage goes ahead.
It
was a great effort from the lads and another step towards completion of
the extension.
The
concrete stage is scheduled for Tuesday 22nd April with the steel
structure for the extension planned for the following week.

PUDSEY CLASSIC GETS "CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS" BOOST
The
Pudsey Classic, now in it's fourth successive year, has been recognised
by the BCGBA as one of the country's leading competitions, gaining a place on the
reserve list for the 2008 Champion of Champions.
The
Champion of Champions event is held at the Waterloo in Blackpool, with
the final on
Saturday 27th September 2008. This is a prestigious end of season event at
which all 16 county merit winners plus 16 major open event winners are
invited.
The
competing field of 32 of the country's top players is a major event on
the national bowling calendar and there is a chance the winner of the
Pudsey Classic will be invited.
Pudsey
are 3rd out of 13 events on the reserve list for a space in the Champion
of Champions, which means if three individuals win more than one of the
top 32 events this season, the winner of the Pudsey Classic will be
invited to play in Blackpool, as a winner of more than one event is only
entitled to one place.
As
the final of the Pudsey Classic (Sat 4th Oct 2008) is staged the week
following the Champion of Champions, the winner of the previous year's
Classic will therefore become eligible if a place is offered.
PUDSEY
SPONSORED WALK - SATURDAY 1ST MARCH 2008
The
sun smiled on the 43 Pudsey BC members who took on the challenge of a
10-mile walk around 10 bowling greens in Pudsey on Saturday 1st March.
The
idea is to raise funds towards Pudsey's building project in order to
provide a viewing platform and disabled access to the club.
The
group of walkers met at Pudsey BC for a bacon butty, before setting out
on the long hike at 10.00am. Organiser Stuart Hanson led the way, with a
gentle start to Pudsey Park, which is less than a mile from Pudsey
Bowling Club.
From
the park it was then another pleasing downhill stroll to Littlemoor
before progressing to Troydale. Next it was back up the hill and cutting
accross to Pudsey Britannia. This was the 5th green of the day and was
celebrated with a quick pint at the pub.
At
the start of the next section to Stanningley Park, a few of the lads
helped push a chap in his wheelchair, which appeared to have a flat
battery. Doing their good deed for the day caused a delay before
reaching the park but everyone re-grouped before the next trip to
Farsley, with an impromptu game of bowls on the grass near the tennis
courts.
A
bit of a trek to the next green at Farsley West Royd, with a few grey
clouds threatening to spoil the day. A few light spots of the wet stuff
though didn't dampen the spirits and it was on to Farsley Cricket &
Bowling Club.
A
bit of a scenic detour down to the ring road and to the penultimate stop
at Calverley Park. It was a refreshing sight to see some of the
Calverley members had the kettle on, so we could all have a brew before
the final stage.
The
last section of the walk was around 3 miles past Calverley Golf club and
mostly uphill but it was pleasing to see everyone make it back home to
Pudsey at around 2.30pm.
A
welcome beer and a hot meal was ready at the club and Stuart thanked and
congratulated all those who took part and had worked behind the scenes
raising sponsorship, preparing the food and helping the day run
smoothly.
It
was a fantastic day for the club with jokes and laughter all the way
round the course and everyone who took part should be proud of their
efforts as it will go a long way to raising the funds needed for the
extension at the club.
See
the Gallery Page for the pictures from the walk
